San Antonio State Supported Living Center Facts

  • The Living Center (formerly known as the State School) was established in 1978 by the Texas Legislature as a result of interested parents from the South Texas area wanting their family members closer to home. One of thirteen residential facilities operated by the Texas Department of Health and Human Services, the San Antonio Living Center is one of many choices Texans can choose in an array of service options.
  • Client demographics  (300 Individuals)
    • 45% Hispanic

  • The facility offers comprehensive services meeting the needs of people with developmental disabilities, behavioral and psychiatric challenges, medical problems, provides vocational training, and physical management therapies.
  • The Living Center employs 600 staff in professional and paraprofessional areas.
    • Three full time Physicians
    • 77 nurses (LVN and RN)
    • 400 direct service providers over three shifts per day
    • Staff demographics: 50% Hispanic, 30% African American, 18% Caucasian, 2% Other
  • The Living Center is a major economic contributor to San Antonio and South Texas region.
    • Annual payroll budget of over $15.5 million
    • Total operational budget of over $21 million
    • Residents spend some $400,000 per year of their own money for services and goods in local San Antonio businesses.
  • The average cost per bed day for fiscal year 2006 was $315, the lowest for all facilities.
  • The Volunteer Services Council of the San Antonio State Supported Living Center, a non-profit organization, is instrumental in securing goods, services, and funds, which go directly to the residents of the facility.

Random Facts

90% of the population has multiple disabilities including visual, auditory, mobility, sensory, verbal and psychiatric challenges.
 
Approximately 30% of the population live with life-threatening medical issues.

More than 82 regular volunteers assisted the Living Center in various events and programs, contributing 3,000 hours of service. (fiscal yr 2005)

More than half of the individuals served have 5 or more visits from family during the year.
