Current and Past Projects
Over the last 12 years, the VSC has assisted the State Supported Living Center in funding several projects for the benefit of the individuals served by the Living Center. These include:
Establishment of the Volunteer Pavilion Building which includes a covered patio, indoor bathrooms, changing and stage area. This building is used for various services and special events.
Re-establishment of the Leisure Recreation aquatics/leisure swim program with the addition of a therapeutic Recreation Specialist and Lifeguard. Provided equipment and volunteers.
Establishment and maintenance of the Memorial Garden, located in the heart of the campus. It is a multi-sensory garden that attracts butterflies and provides a quiet place for individuals to enjoy year-round.
Establishment of a Lifestyle change program/training for folks who live in home 766 who are over weight. This includes the Swerves
Fitness Program, health education and a volunteer program.
The VSC is one of many officially sanctioned Fiesta San Antonio locations. Annually, the VSC hosts a community Fiesta Event, complete with a parade down the main street. It is the last free parking, free admission event of the Fiesta season. We were awarded the “Spirit of Fiesta Award” in 1999.
The San Antonio State Supported Living Center is the official host of SAISD District Cross Country Runs and the Antonian H.S. Invitational Run. More than 2,600 students run on the campus every year.
In 1997, the San Antonio State Supported Living Center was awarded a grant for $7,328 by the San Antonio Area
Foundation to purchase materials and equipment were used to implement the Sensory Skills
program in Home 673, as well as, augment the sensory stimulation room in the
Living Center's Seniors Program.
In 1999, the San Antonio State Supported Living Center was awarded a grant for $3,500 by the Junior League to
purchase multi-sensory mobile carts to create/enhance sensory stimulation rooms in 2 homes and
1 day program area. The Junior League of San Antonio has provided grants for several other
projects, including a home renovation project in 2005.
Due to improvements in medicine, many of the folks with mental retardation are living longer. This
is true also at the San Antonio State Supported Living Center. Some of the people who live at the center no longer desire
to work; others have developed age related medical conditions that prohibit the addition of work
stress or ability to leave home. Therefore, programs related to retirement and Sensory
Stimulation have expanded and are in need of additional equipment, training materials and
vehicles which allows for easier access for people who use wheelchairs.
Equipment and materials are needed to address the need for health and lifestyle improvements
for the Living Center residents are needed. A simple sports track for distance and improvement during
walking exercises would be ideal.
Homes are in need of state-of-the-art active treatment supplies and wheel chair accessible vehicles
to provide transportation to day programming and safe access into the community.
