Volunteer Information

Opportunities for individuals and students

Chaplaincy:  Participates in non-denominational service held every Sunday in the Volunteer Pavilion.  Also assist the Chaplain in campus activities as needed.

Classroom Aide:  Assists classroom instructor with educational and employment teaching.  May include life skills and pre-employment activities (Vocational Bldg).

Clerical Volunteer:  Basic duties include phone handling, typing, filing, copying and shredding documents.

Direct Care Professional Assistant:  Works one-on-one with individuals, participates in dorm activities, and assists with transporting individuals around campus.  Assists staff as needed.

Friendly Visitor:  Spends time with different individuals.  Takes walks and participates in games and other activities on the dorm.

Seamstress Assistant:  Folds and marks clothing, counts items and may transport laundry to dorm.

Recreational Aide:  Assists staff in providing therapeutic and recreational activities both on and off campus to an individual.  Can include accompanying on field trips activities in the gym, etc.

Teacher / Trainer:  Instructs and directs during and educational program or training session. Topics can vary due to expertise.

Housekeeping Assistant:  Assist in all areas of housekeeping for the facility.  Weekends primarily.

Memorial Garden Aide: Assist in keeping the Memorial Garden tidy and free of weeds as weather permits.

Special Assignments

Fundraising Volunteer:  For events sponsored by the Volunteer Services Council like the Fiesta Family Fun Day, Christmas Parties, Rummage Sales, etc.

Human Rights Committee Member:  Members advocate for legal and human rights of all residents during meetings.  Members represent the viewpoint of the community. (Thursdays)

Special Event Volunteer:  For special holiday events like festivals, carnivals, birthday parties, dances, etc.  Dances are usually held in the gym on Friday night form 6:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

Student Credits / Internships:  We have many opportunities for students to complete intern requirements in various departments including: psychology, physical therapy, music therapy, kinesiology, nursing and public relations.

Volunteer Services Council Board Member:  Requires additional application and Board approval.  Members manage responsibilities of a 501 ©  3 non-profit.

Group Volunteers

There are many ways your group or organization can be involved with the residents of the San Antonio State Supported Living Center.  Things you enjoy doing are often what our residents enjoy. Here are some great ideas to consider:

  • Movie Night
  • Dance in the Gym (Fridays)
  • Ice Cream Social
  • Memorial Garden
  • Fall Festival Carnival
  • Christmas Party
  • Talent Show
  • Dance Program
  • Basketball or Volleyball Game
  • Escorting individuals to chapel (Sundays)
  • Reading Books
  • Working on puzzles
  • Playing a board game
  • Taking a walk outside
  • Playing and outdoor sport
  • Playing an instrument or singing

However you or you group wishes to share time, your efforts are always welcomed.  You can make a world of difference!
