San Antonio Living Center’s Family Fiesta: Saturday, April 18, 2009

The Volunteer Services Council of the San Antonio State Supported Living Center annually hosts the San Antonio State Supported Living Center’s Family Fiesta.  Admission is free to the public. Proceeds from booth sales benefit 300 persons with mental retardation who live at the San Antonio State Supported Living Center.

This event is the only non-alcoholic officially sanctioned Fiesta San Antonio event that caters to the disabled community. It includes:

  • Community Parade
  • Craft Bazaar
  • Carnival Games
  • Delicious Food Booths
  • Live Musical Entertainment
  • Kid’s area and much more!

Our event begins with a festive parade on campus featuring Fiesta royalty, local celebrities, bands, floats, dancers and clowns. Every year, a local celebrity is chosen as the Grand Marshal to lead the parade down the main street of the Living Center. The parade route is approximately ¼ miles in length and usually begins at noon.

Past parade participants have included: WOAI Randy Beamer, U.S. Marine Corps Color Guard, South San Antonio West Campus Drill Team, Brackenridge High School Band, Ballet Folklorico de San Antonio, Greyhound Society and many others.

Entertainment continues under the shaded Volunteer Pavilion where local bands and performers take the stage. Food booths offer delicious choices for the whole family: funnel cake, hamburgers, chalupas, sausage tacos, lemonade and more. Craft and activity booths showcase fine silver, Fiesta must-have’s and other items for sale. Join us in April to celebrate Fiesta Living Center Style!

Fiesta Coronation Ball

The San Antonio State Supported Living Center has its own Royal Court during Fiesta. Nominated by staff and friends, individuals served by the State Supported Living Center are chosen to represent each of the eight homes on campus.

Winners are selected by the number of votes campus wide and are often treated to a mini-makeover by the Milan School of Cosmetology. A Coronation Ball hosted by the Volunteer Services Council and the Living Center’s Leisure Recreation Department takes place in the evening. The highlight of the evening is the crowning of the kings and queens by Miss Fiesta. Dinner and dancing complete the night. More than 125 guests attend this event, including family and friends.

The Royal Court also has the privilege of riding on their own float during the Living Center’s Family Fiesta held the following Saturday.

Little Miss SASS Fiesta Contest

To encourage participation in our Fiesta event, the VSC recently established a "Little Miss SASS Fiesta Contest." Contestants must raise "votes" to win. With votes valued at 5¢, the minimum amount of votes to qualify for contestant registration is $50.00. The top three "vote receivers" will be crowned Queen, Princess and Duchess and will participate in our parade during Fiesta week. The contest is open to young ladies age 6 to 10 years old. Because it is a fundraising title, all proceeds raised will benefit the 300 consumers living with mental retardation at the San Antonio State Supported Living Center. Winners are often invited to attend other Fiesta events representing the Living Center as royalty. For questions or comments, please contact us at (210) 531-3729 or (210) 531-3728. Entry form (.pdf).
